Someone the other day asked me what "Phantom of Manhatten" is about

Essentially, Mme Giry tells us that the night Christine spent with the Phantom, they made some real music of the night, and she got knocked up (Forsyth never mentions how she hid it so well after the opera house was closed for six months before the masquerade. Not that continuity is important or anything, what matters is the SEX). Then she dies (Giry, that is, not Christine). Anyway we know it's not Raoul's kid because he got shot in the genitals when he was a boy (I only wish I was kidding). Erik finds out about his son (his name is Pierre, because Forsyth couldn't afford a name dictionary), and plots to get Christine to come to New York where he's now living. He builds an opera house and she sings in it, she finds out he's behind it all, and after dressing up as a clown, he tells her he wants custody. Raoul is all "wtf... no."

So then Erik's assistant decides that Pierre has to die... He accedentally shoots Christine, and she dies. Raoul, Erik, and Pierre all see it happen, but none of them really react. Raoul tells Pierre that he's Erik's son and tells him he can choose who he wants to live with. he chooses Erik, and Raoul is left to find another girl that doesn't mind dating a man without a penis.

Forsyth later said that he regretted the mess. The readers do too.
